Ukraine – Experts of the European Union are ready to support reforms to strengthen the independence of the judicial system

March 25, 2014 President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Yaroslav Romaniuk met with expert EU Project « Support to the reform of the justice sector in Ukraine » Virgilijus Valancius . The Supreme Court of Ukraine is one of the beneficiaries of this project.

Its goal is to accelerate reforms in the justice sector in Ukraine and strengthen the independence of the judiciary.

During the meeting were discussed a strategy to reform the judicial system of Ukraine and the identification priorities for cooperation in the near future.

Mr. Romaniuk informed Mr Valancius about the main directions of reforming the judicial system of Ukraine in the new political environment and stressed that Ukraine continues on the path toward European integration.

The President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine also reported about the formation of a special committee of the Interim Parliament of Ukraine on preparation of the draft law on amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine.

In this regard, the Supreme Court of Ukraine work out proposals for the part of the Constitution which relate to the Justice sector , in particular the role of the Supreme Court of Ukraine . The ultimate aim of these changes is the construction of modern Ukraine and an effective judicial system which would preserve national identity and meet the European standards to provide reliable judicial protection of rights and legitimate interests of citizens and legal entities.

Mr. Romaniuk also mentioned on the issue of public confidence in the judiciary Ukraine. The President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine stressed that the problem is complex. It takes coordinated, decisive and consistent efforts of the judicial community and civil society representatives.

Mr. Valancius assured that the project is ready to provide the necessary expertise to establish an independent and effective judicial system in Ukraine in line with international and European standards.

The meeting was also attended by Chief of the International Department of the Supreme Court of Ukraine Lina Gubar.
